Azurite is a striking copper carbonate mineral (Cu₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂) best known for its deep, vivid azure-blue color. Its name is derived from the Persian word lazhward, meaning “blue.” Azurite commonly forms in the oxidized zones of copper ore deposits, often occurring alongside malachite, chrysocolla, and cuprite. In its natural crystalline state, it may appear as prismatic or tabular crystals, botryoidal clusters, or earthy masses, though tumbling brings out its saturated blue color and smooth polish.

With a Mohs hardness of 3.5–4, azurite is relatively soft and requires gentle handling. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and displays a vitreous to dull luster depending on form. Significant localities for azurite include Morocco (famous for world-class crystal specimens), Namibia, Australia, and the United States (notably Arizona and New Mexico).
