Clear calcite, also known as Iceland spar when in transparent rhombohedral crystal form, is a calcium carbonate mineral prized for its clarity and optical properties. It is typically colorless to milky white, with a vitreous luster and a tendency to display double refraction—an optical phenomenon where objects viewed through the crystal appear doubled—due to calcite’s strong birefringence.

With a Mohs hardness of 3, clear calcite is relatively soft and can be easily scratched, requiring gentle handling.  It belongs to the trigonal crystal system. Significant deposits are found in Iceland (famed for optical-grade Iceland spar), as well as Mexico, the United States, and Brazil.

In metaphysical traditions, clear calcite is considered a stone of clarity, insight and evolution. It is said to be an energy amplifier. It is strongly associated to the theme of ‘remembering’; it is a stone of integration and forward movement, positive blessings and innovation. Associated with the Crown Chakra, it is thought to connect higher consciousness with practical understanding, promoting balance between spiritual insight and grounded awareness.
