Ruby is the red variety of corundum, an aluminum oxide mineral (Al₂O₃) prized for its rich red color, which comes from trace amounts of chromium. With a Mohs hardness of 9, ruby is one of the hardest natural minerals, second only to diamond. It crystallizes in the trigonal system and shows distinct basal cleavage.
