Diplomustus is an extinct prehistoric freshwater fish, a distant relative to the modern-day herring or sardine.

Three large lakes covered a part of the territory of Wyoming in prehistoric times. The area of the Green River Formation is a fossil-lover’s dream location. There, fine grained sediments preserved the fossils of millions of creatures, flora and fauna of the Eocene period.
