A specimen of larvikite tumbled pocket stone.
Larvikite is somewhat a cousin of labradorite. It is a coarse-grained igneous rock belonging to the monzonite family, composed primarily of alkali feldspar with smaller amounts of plagioclase, nepheline, and mafic minerals such as augite and biotite. Its most distinctive feature is schiller or labradorescence—a striking silver-blue to steel-gray flash caused by light reflecting from microscopic lamellae within the feldspar crystals. This effect gives larvikite a dynamic, shimmering appearance, especially in polished form. It is quarried almost exclusively from the Larvik region of Norway, where it formed deep within the Earth’s crust through the slow cooling of magma, allowing large feldspar crystals to develop.
In metaphysical circles, larvikite is considered a stone of grounding, protection, and enhanced mental clarity. It is believed to stimulate inner vision, sharpen intuition, and aid in processing complex information while shielding against negative energies. Associated with the Root and Third Eye Chakras, larvikite is thought to balance practicality with intuitive insight, making it a valued companion for meditation and decision-making.
