A specimen of moss agate tumbled pocket stone.
Moss agate is a variety of chalcedony (SiO₂) characterized by its green, brown, or black dendritic inclusions resembling moss, foliage, or landscapes. These inclusions are typically formed by trace amounts of iron or manganese oxides within the microcrystalline quartz. Unlike true banded agates, moss agate is generally translucent to opaque, with patterns that appear suspended within the stone, giving each specimen a unique, natural “scenic” quality.
With a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, moss agate is durable and polishes to a vitreous luster. It belongs to the trigonal crystal system, though like all chalcedonies, it forms in microcrystalline masses rather than visible crystals. Major sources include India, Brazil, Uruguay, the United States (notably Montana), and South Africa. Tumbled specimens are especially valued for revealing the depth and fine detail of their moss-like inclusions.
In metaphysical traditions, moss agate is regarded as a stone of growth, renewal, and grounding. Associated with the Heart Chakra, it is thought to promote harmony with nature, abundance, and emotional balance, while fostering perseverance and stability. Its “garden-like” patterns have long connected it to themes of fertility and new beginnings.
