Sacral Chakra Associations: Desires & Life Force
The Sacral Chakra, located below your belly button, is traditionally called the Svadhishana centre and has to do with the idea of ‘home’. The Sacral Chakra deals with lessons related to the use and exchange of our energy with the world (through work or sexuality, for example), as well as lessons related to desire.
The Sacral Chakra is associated with the flow of your life force, your will and desires. This inner fire has an appetite for life, creativity and enjoyment and is associated with the physical use of our energy. It is an energy of initiative, which responds to the callings of needs and desires. Food, rest, exercise and pleasure are goals it sets out for. It seeks balance, well-being and comfort. Taking care of yourself, having a sense of energetic balance, is one of the first ways in which your will and desires can take form – and it creates a healthy relationship to your life force and an appreciation for existence. A healthy vital force is attuned to worthiness, joy, and feeling comfortable in your body.

Why you would want to work on your Sacral Chakra
You could be interested in working on your Sacral Chakra to support empowered transformations in your life and welcome abundance and blessings in all their forms. The Sacral Chakra has to do with your engagement with the world, and you may want to support it if you are engaging in new activities that require action and creativity. This chakra supports the concept of merit and worthiness. You are worthy and deserving of abundance in all its forms. You are worthy and deserving of enjoying life and the pleasures of existence. This chakra works on the notion that your well-being is connected to the well-being of the whole, and that your active, healthy participation in the world makes it a better place. Engaging your energy with the world brings forth abundance in all its forms.
Emotions associated with an unbalanced Sacral Chakra are guilt and unworthiness.
Signs your Sacral Chakra is out of balance
Here are examples showcasing how your Sacral Chakra could be out of balance. It may be over-active or under-active, which leads to different expressions of energy in your life.
Your Sacral Chakra could be over-active if your energy is pushed to the extremes and you do not control the appetites of your boundless desires. If your involvement with the world is ‘gluttonous’, you will not be able to healthily honour the needs and limits of your physical, emotional and spiritual bodies. You will feel your energy going up and down in an unstable way. You may find yourself abusing yourself, pushing yourself too far, and draining your vital energy. Sometimes, this abuse is seen as a form of ‘self-care’ but it is actually self-sabotage. For example, working out too hard and harming your physical body, or partying too hard and depleting your energy to the point of making you sick.
Alternatively, your Sacral Chakra could be under-active. The idea of ‘not feeling good enough’ is a good sign of an under-active chakra. Signs of it could take the form of demotivation, disinterest or lack of inspiration. If you feel bottled up energy and disengaged, this is a good sign to work on your Sacral Chakra. Other signs include bitterness, frustration, negativity, being resentful of others, feeling guilt, and making others suffer. You may be irritated or jealous of others having a good time. A good first step to move out of that pattern is to focus on healthy self-care, and reconnect with your energy and your worthiness of being happy.

Essential oils can support anchoring in specific intentions. You can integrate the use of specific oils or specific blends in your self-care practice. For example, you may use them symbiotically with practices such as meditation, breath work, yoga or stretching. As you soothe your mind and body into a relaxed state, you will link specific scents to the experience, and will be able to use the oils as an energetic “pick me up” throughout the day, whenever you need it.
