Crystal Collecting Basics at your Fingertips

Minera Emporium is proud to present the first of a series of online courses to educate the public about the different facets of mineral collecting.

After discussing with clients and mineral enthusiasts over the last 5 years, we could see how curious people were, but how they felt overwhelmed by how vast the field of mineralogy seems. It is not a domain too complex to learn on one’s own. Like all passions, you start with the basics, and you evolve as you learn more.

The Crystal Collector Basics course is a great asset to initiate crystal lovers to the basic information that can give greater confidence to grow a collection on solid ground. The information contained in this course will allow you to understand what is available on the market, and know how to recognize, identify and appreciate different specimens.

The first module is all about the mineral industry itself, and how we are able to acquire all sorts of specimens nowadays. The second covers ways of collecting, giving you all sorts of different frameworks you may want to adopt, whether your collection is based off of mineralogy, or spirituality, or both. The last module goes more in depth in regards to what makes a valuable specimen, subjectively and objectively, in order for you to tailor your acquisitions according to what you like.

Module 1: Mineral Industry Module

We start off looking over how the mineral industry has participated in the expansion of culture and civilizations over time, and how we have arrived at a point where we can have access to so many mineral treasures in crystal shops. We will go over a few different industry branches that have formed, which lead us to different types of products on the market. We will go over the different places you can source your crystal specimens, inviting you to consider different acquisition sources, which can take you abroad or… out in nature!

We will also cover what comes into play in the realm of ethics when it comes to the acquisition of crystals that come from around the world, and the evolution of marketing strategies, particularly those aimed at spiritually-driven collectors.

Module 1 covers:

  • The Evolution of the Mineral Industry
  • Crystal Sourcing
  • Sourcing and Ethics
  • Marketing

Module 2: Ways of Collecting Module

The second module explores the different frameworks you may want to consider, depending on the type of collector you want to be, and the types of specimens you are drawn to.  We will look into the differences and particularities between mineralogy-driven collectors and spiritually-driven collectors, and see what different frameworks can be used by both.

Module 2 covers:

  • Mineralogy vs Spirituality Approaches
  • Size Options, Types of Specimens

  • Mineralogy and Geology Basics
  • Gem Properties
