Throat Chakra Associations: Communication & Integrity

The Throat Chakra, located at the base of your throat, is traditionally called the Vishuddha centre, and is all about expression. The Throat Chakra deals with life lessons related to your will and self-expression.

The Throat Chakra is associated with self-expression and is intricately connected to our will and integrity. The voice is a channel for truth, exteriorizing internal spiritual processes, and the quality of our communication is associated with how attuned we are to ourselves. Maturity involves speaking our truth, and fully tapping into the expression of emotions and feelings, whether this involves expressing discontent, crying, laughing or other. Tapping into self expression allows us to honour our truth, attune ourselves to spiritual inspiration, and reach new levels of creativity.

Why you would want to work on your Throat Chakra

You could be interested in working on your Throat Chakra if you want to amplify your honesty and openness. You may have messages to share with the world and are ready to advocate for the causes you believe in. You may want to support the full expression of your self and your messages in a truthful and aligned manner. You could want to work on this energy centre to facilitate communication, explore creative ways of expressing yourself and all that you are, to connect with the world and others on a higher level.

A trait associated with an unbalanced Throat Chakra is dishonesty, towards yourself or others.

Signs your Throat Chakra is out of balance

Here are examples showcasing how your Throat Chakra could be out of balance. It may be over-active or under-active, which leads to different expressions of energy in your life.

An over-active Throat Chakra is associated with useless or even harmful communication, which can be very disconnected from your authenticity. This could include talking behind people’s backs, gossiping, spreading rumours or even flat out lies. Your goal is not to transmit truth but to entertain, deceive or slander. Dishonesty is at the forefront of your expression, with yourself and with others. When you do this, you cannot tap into the depth of your potential and creative powers, and it prevents your from creating valuable connections with your soul family.

An under-active Throat Chakra is associated with shutting down emotions and communication. You could be lacking the maturity required to listen and speak your truth (perhaps to protect yourself). In this scenario, you are not positively attuned to your individuality, because you see it as a nuisance to interconnection. You may lack truthfulness, saying yes when you mean no, and no when you mean yes. This greatly affects the quality of one’s engagement with the world and the depth of connection that can be developed.

In order to work on this chakra, one must reconnect with the notion of personal truth. A great tool to attune yourself to your authenticity is to journal, seeing as this is something you do strictly for yourself. You can explore not censoring yourself, and really tapping into what you feel and how you see things. This way, you can start befriending yourself, and this will give you the confidence to share your authenticity with the world.

How to Balance your Throat Chakra

Balancing this energy centre involves integrating creativity in your life, as well as deeper levels of self-awareness in regards to your self-expression.

Self-care practices can take many forms:

  • Explore connecting with your true internal dialogue, using journaling. Explore what are your core truths, and where you censor yourself (inside yourself and outside in the world)
  • Explore creative pursuits, such as art-making, writing non-fiction, fiction or poetry, or singing.
  • Enjoy silence, particularly in the early moments of your day, if possible.
  • Monitor yourself to see where you are censoring yourself or not being honest with what you choose to do, and who you choose to be with in your life. See if you can calibrate to deeper levels authenticity in your spoken words and actions.
  • Use essential oils to stimulate your senses and anchor in your intentions
